Reinstalled and accidentally chose Pro instead of Home Advice? : Windows10

I found another post on this subreddit that suggested running the setup again and choosing Upgrade. This did not work as it wanted to install Pro, which we did not want. During the installation, we had to choose between Windows 10 Home and Pro. He chose Pro as he originally had Windows 7 Home Premium.

The games are installed on the hard drive, but Steam itself is on the SSD with Windows. I have all my steam games on a second hard drive. It works fine, just make sure that app.manifest files aren't deleted (they shouldn't be) and you can just point steam to the them when you reinstall it. This morning he notified me that his version of Windows was not activated. We discovered that we should have installed Home instead of Pro.

Accidentally Installed home Instead of Pro

You would then use your Win10 installer, run the setup.exe in it from within Windows, and follow the prompts keeping all your data. The download for Windows 10 is the same for Home and Pro. All that matters is the license key that you provide during the install. You can't downgrade Pro to Home, you have to clean install Home.

Keep in mind I have tried to reinstall from a USB device to no effect. It should keep your data, but it will remove any non-Windows-store applications you have installed. For me, the techs put Home on instead of Pro after replacing the motherboard. They gave me an oem key for Pro, but of course it wasn't that easy. MS took remote control of my laptop and got it fixed.

I upgraded this to Pro using the Microsoft Store. If you have the Win 10 Pro key, you just be able to input that to upgrade from Home to Pro. Any help you could offer would be appreciated.

My brother was having trouble with his hard drive failing, so I helped him migrate everything to a new SSD with a new hard drive for all of his games. He was using Windows 10 after having upgraded it from Windows 7. We reinstalled it from a DVD I created using the media creation tool. Is there a way to downgrade to Home without having to do another clean install? If we do have to do that, will he have to re-download all of his Steam games again?

Fresh install of Windows 10 installs home instead of Pro

He assumed the "premium" was the same as "pro". Over the past few days he has been reinstalling all of his software, including re-downloading tons of games on Steam. You install W10 Home, and then use the change product key option, and then enter the W10 Pro key and in a few minutes Windows 10 Home converts to W10 Pro. Hi, I tried to upgrade a friends pc from Windows 7 Home x32 edition to Windows 10 x 32 Home edition Unfortunately I did not obtain what windows 7 Home x32 build he has.

When I try to use the Windows Store, it needs me to either purchase Pro , or enter a product key (which I don't have, see above). After upgrading, proceed to enter the Windows 10 Pro product key. I don't have experience with two drives, dual boot, and such things. My HP laptop with a 1 TB hard drive with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit broke its cooling fan and the repair place says it would they might... Essentially I want this program (app to reside in my system tray or task bar on windows start up I do know how to start a program with windows ……… I do not even know where... To add, there's no problem staying with Pro as long as it properly activates.

When I go through the troubleshooter for activation, it says it can't find any devices linked to my account that I could use the change hardware function on. When I look at what devices it DID find, they all say "Edition Doesn't Match" with Windows 10 Professional listed, and wont let me use them. There is no further information in System that states what version of... I accidentally downloaded Windows 10 Pro instead of Home and I am having difficulty switching to Home. I used a disk my Dad gave me to download it . I tried the reinstall options that wouldn't delete all of my files and they ended up only allowing me to redownload Windows 10 Pro. I do not have an activation code for Windows 10 Pro and so have been running an unactivated copy of Windows 10. I had planned on using my Windows 7 key to activate but that doesn't seem to work for Windows 10 Pro.

There are some features in Pro more appropriate to Networking and businesses but for a home/consumer user they just don't need to used. If so your Win 7 installation may still be available to roll back to Win 7 and then upgrade to win 10 Home. As already mentioned, the Win 10 installation drive has Ver home and pro . When I get back to work next week I have an ISO that only contains Pro downloaded from SA site. Doesn't help me much THIS week re-installing home laptop while on vacation.

I can't enter a product key because I don't have one, I have a digital license. Enter the product key, close then restart your computer, it should reactivate automatically. Since you don't have the code, you will need to reinstall. You can edit your registry to trick it to thinking it is pro, then doing an in place upgrade reinstall, you should be able to pick your pro device on your MS account after. Unfortunately I don't think I do, I got it through my University and Dreamspark and can no longer access those accounts where the product key is stored. You will either have to reinstall home, or buy a pro key.
